The project TRANSPORT.SAF.ER (“Upgrading multimodal transport and road safety in cross-border area”) is a cross-border cooperation project implemented under the Interreg VI-A IPA CBC “Greece–Albania 2021–2027” Programme, Priority Axis 2 – Improving accessibility in the cross-border area and Specific Objective RSO3.2 – Sustainable transport. With a total budget of €1.443.438,30, co-financed by the EU, the project brings together three public authorities: – the Region of Epirus (Lead Beneficiary), the Region of Ionian Islands (Project Beneficiary 2) and the Regional Council of Vlora (Project Beneficiary 3).
TRANSPORT.SAF.ER aims to strengthen multimodal accessibility & create a common policy in improving road safety framework in the Greece–Albania border area. The partners will identify road safety hazards, legislation & road design regulations bottlenecks, and suggest counter measures, practices & solutions for improving the current state of play & mitigating its impact. Through targeted flagship interventions in Ioannina, Corfu and Vlora, that focus on key multimodal nodes near airports (GR) & environmentally sensitive areas (AL), combined with joint planning, institutional cooperation and capacity-building activities, the project promotes a solid upgrade in road safety planning & aims to upskill the respective technical workforce, involved in road planning & construction.
The Region of Epirus, as Lead Beneficiary of TRANSPORT.SAF.ER, is responsible for the overall coordination and implementation of the project, ensuring that the project achieves its planned objectives and target results. With a budget of €599,717.40, one of main activities the construction of the new roundabout near Ioannina Airport “King Pyrros”, an intervention designed to reduce travel times through improved traffic flow and to significantly enhance road safety for the users of the Ioannina Ring Road, the Ioannina–Kozani National Road, and the visitors accessing King Pyrros Airport. Through this investment, the Region of Epirus directly contributes to the project’s overarching objective by reinforcing the safety and functionality of one of the region’s most critical pieces of road infrastructure, with positive impacts at both regional and cross-border levels.
